PORTLAND FARMERS MARKETS

Scenes from the Wednesday Farmers' Market on the Park Blocks in downtown Portland, Oregon. This market is one of 27 weekly Farmers' Markets around the Portland Metro Area. There are three markets each week in downtown Portland, markets in nearly every neighborhood of the city as well as markets in many suburban and rural communities throughout the metro area. Spring Hill Farm and West Union Gardens are representative of the numerous regional farmers who now market their produce almost exclusively through farmers' markets. Portland Sausage impressario Fred Carlo, in the lower right hand, is a regular fixture at several of the Portland markets. You can find out more about Oregon Farmers' Markets at Oregon Farmers' Markets Association.

PORTLAND COMMUNITY GARDENS

Portland Parks and Recreation sponsors 30 community gardens throughout the city of Portland. Below are four views from the Reed Community Garden on the Reed College campus, the largest and one of the oldest community gardens in Portland. This garden is currently threatened by plans to build a new dormitory on these garden plots which have been cultivated and nurtured for thirty years. Garden supporters have succeeded in getting Reed College to allow the garden to remain in its current location for another year but the longterm survival of this significant community resource remains in doubt.
