What makes some communities easy to walk and bike around while others can really only be navigated in a car? On April 27, Stephanie Farquhar, Assistant Professor of Community Health, at Portland State University's School of Community Health and Jennifer Dill, Assistant Professor at Portland State University's School of Urban Studies & Planning talks with Locus Focus host Barbara Bernstein about CONNECTIVITY and PROXIMITY, two key planning concepts that determine transportation modes of choice. CONNECTIVITY describes how streets can connect us to where we want to go or prevent us from getting places except by car. PROXIMITY describes how close our destinations are to where we live, work and go to school. Again, closeness encourages walking. Long distances between home, school, work, shopping and cultural attractions promote more automobile use.

Our program begins with a short feature produced by Whole Communities Radio Project intern Patrik Angstrom-Poore.
